Actors are a key component of Use case analysis: a technique for gathering requirements for technology system design. Use cases model business requirements by describing in simple, non-technical language how the system will be used. This approach defines:

  1. Actors: represent a role played by one or more persons or outside systems
  2. Use case: illustrates a required system function under certain scenarios or events
  3. System boundary: divides functions and operations included inside the system from those provided by external resources
